Chlorophyll – the “green blood” of plants and its effect on human health

What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is the green pigment in leaves and plants, which allows them to perform photosynthesis – a process in which they convert sunlight into chemical energy.
The substance is very similar in structure to hemoglobin (the protein that transports oxygen in the blood), but instead of an iron atom, it has a magnesium atom at its center.

Its common form in dietary supplements is chlorophyllin – a water-soluble derivative of chlorophyll, which is better absorbed by the body.

Health benefits according to studies

1. 🌿 Detoxification of the body

Chlorophyll binds to toxins in the digestive system and liver – including carcinogens, molds (such as aflatoxin), and heavy metals – and prevents them from being absorbed into the body.
Studies have found that taking chlorophyllin helped reduce levels of toxins in urine and blood, and reduced oxidative damage to cells.

2. 🛡️ Powerful antioxidant

Chlorophyll contains active antioxidants that neutralize free radicals – a process that slows down cell aging, reduces chronic inflammation, and contributes to skin, eye, and cell health.

3. 💨 Body odor and bad breath

Chlorophyll (especially in liquid or capsule form) has been shown to be effective in reducing unpleasant body odors, including bad breath, sweat, and urine odor. It acts as an "internal odor neutralizer," especially when it comes to internal sources (such as digestive problems or gut bacteria).

4. 🩸 Support for blood formation

Due to its similarity to the structure of hemoglobin, some claim that chlorophyll helps improve iron and hematocrit levels.
Initial studies have shown a modest improvement in mild anemia and the oxidative capacity of red blood cells – but further controlled clinical studies are needed.

5. 🌱 Digestive health

  • Helps regulate intestinal motility.

  • Supports the reduction of intestinal infections.

  • May help prevent constipation and improve nutrient absorption.

Common uses

Use Consumption form frequency
Body/mouth odor Drops or capsules Once or twice a day
Detoxification Powder or liquid Up to 100 mg of chlorophyllin per day
General support Green smoothies, liquid supplement 50–200 mg per day

Side effects and warnings

  • Chlorophyll is considered very safe , even for daily consumption.

  • Mild side effects (rare): diarrhea, changes in stool color (greenish), mild nausea.

  • Pregnant women, children and people with liver disease – it is recommended that they consult a doctor before regular use.

  • Is not a substitute for iron for those suffering from diagnosed anemia.

How to choose a quality supplement?

✔️ Contains Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin
✔️ Clear dosage of actual chlorophyll (not just liquid/volume amount)
✔️ No artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners
✔️ A supplement that has undergone laboratory tests for the presence of heavy metals and pesticides

Summary

Chlorophyll, and especially in its supplemental form – chlorophyllin – is considered a powerful yet gentle health supplement, offering a number of benefits: detoxification, body rejuvenation, blood activity support, digestive health, and odor neutralization.
It is suitable as part of a daily health routine, alongside proper nutrition and drinking sufficient water.
